I prefer to take pictures of the person, not the clothes. Keep clothing simple. Uncomfortable clothing makes for uncomfortable pictures so please remember to choose something that makes you feel good on the outside as well as the inside. Please wear something that shows off your style, whether its solid colors or large colorful prints. For family shots, I suggest everyone wear the same or matching tones.(All light or all dark shirts) Jeans for the entire family is always a favorite along with barefeet. Sun dresses, vibrant colored skirts and tutus on little girls really stand out. Little boys look best in jeans with t-shirts or dressier, untucked shirts. Hats, scarves, funky belts, tutus with leggings and chunky jewelry are all fun accessories to consider.
Babies are best photographed in nothing. Newborns are best photographed before 2 weeks of age because they sleep a lot and are easily pliable…and to avoid baby acne. Kim has some wonderful throws and fun things to wrap your little one in. I do use mom and dad as a backdrop often in newborn shoots, so please try to have a black or dark shirt with you.
Maternity shots are best taken around 32 to 34 weeks. Pregnant moms should try to avoid wearing bra/underwear or clothing that leaves indentation marks on your skin for a few hours before your session. Tank tops, pretty undergarments, oversized button up shirts or lacy, see-thru shirts (pull-over or button up) as well as comfy, flowing pants and jeans are recommended to bring with you. I have sheer wraps and colorful blankets that can be used as cover ups. Also, when doing maternity shots, it’s fun to bring in booties or a blanket that the newborn will be using after they arrive.
If you still are having trouble picking outfits, you can always bring several different outfits to the session so Kim can help you choose which ones would work best.
These are just suggestions. If you have favorites, please feel free to bring them along.

What is the best age to have baby portraits taken? |

For newborns, I recommend scheduling your session date as close to the birth date as possible. It is better to schedule within the first 2 weeks as many babies will develop baby acne soon after this time. During the first few days of life, babies are more “poseable” and still able to curl into little balls which is perfect for capturing their first few days.
After the newborn session, I would suggest capturing milestones which usually coincide with 3, 6, 9 & 12 months old. Ex. ability to hold their head up, sitting up, crawling, first steps. It's important to figure out which stage or stages are most important to you.
I would also suggest bringing anything that you would consider a part of your newborns life to include in the portrait session such as booties, favorite blanket, favorite stuffed animal, family heirloom, sports item, etc. |
